In August ’07, 36 “ruff riders” hit the boards to determine which surf dog was the gnarliest, burliest and most tubular pooch ever to surf the Imperial Beach waves -- this year. Mutts and purebred canines duked it out on long boards, each getting three chances to impress the judges on confidence, length of ride and style. Pups that could grip it and rip it were numerous and competition was fierce. In the end, smaller dogs prevailed, while larger dogs tended to wipe out. Here's how the competition stacked up: In the first heat (surfing dogs only), first place went to Toby, a Shih Tzu mix. Second place to Stoli, a black Labrador; and third place to OB Dude, a bassett mix. In the second heat (surfing dogs with their surfing owners), Zoey, a Jack Russell Terrier, and her owners Scott and Taylor grabbed first place for the second straight year. OB Dude and Barb captured second place; and for the second year in a row, Lauren and Pogey (a poodle mix) took third. Check out all the dogs whose waves didn’t close out too soon.
