When one thinks about Coronado, California, ivy-covered walls so typical at East Coast or Midwestern universities and colleges do not readily come to mind. But there are a few Coronado gardens whose owners cherish the look of Eastern ivy and carefully cultivate these vines in their gardens. During spring and summer months Coronado ivy is a lush, vibrant green color. By October, however, when the images in this gallery were made, ivy leaves are in the process of become an intense red. The speed of the transformation from green to red seems to be governed by exposure to the elements. Protected vines and leaves appear to turn red much more slowly than unprotected vines.
