The green anole, Anolis carolinensis, is commonly referred to as a "chameleon" due to its ability to change color, but it is not a true chameleon. Each animal can change its color to blend with surroundings, from brown through a bright emerald green. The species is native to North America, where it is found mainly in the southeastern parts of the continent. Anoles are most abundant on the coastal plain from North Carolina to Florida, and west into central Texas. Anoles are, by their nature, curious creatures, and a healthy lizard usually has a good awareness of its surroundings. These photos were made near Austin, TX.
