The ornate box turtle, Terrapene ornata, is designated as the Kansas State Reptile, and is one of two box turtle species on the Great Plains that is terrestrial. Adult males have red eyes, while females’ eyes are yellowish brown. These are photos of a single female. The ornate box turtle is found throughout Kansas, and is perhaps most commonly observed attempting to cross roads. These photos were made in Syracuse, Kansas.
