South Coronado Photo Company, which we affectionately refer to as "SoCoFoCo" for brevity, was established in September 2005 in the City of Coronado, California. SoCoFoCo is the brainchild of long-time Coronado resident Donal (Don) Hill, whose photographic interests are expressed in part in the current calendar. Hill has received wonderful support from his family, including wife Barbara, daughter Jennifer and son Geoff, who have contributed to SoCoFoCo both inspirationally and on a practical level.
Don Hill has spent nearly 30 years pursuing his photographic passions and visions, first as an underwater photographer and later as an outdoor photographer of unique, colorful subjects possessing intriguing form. His favorite subjects include nature photography (both wildlife and landscape imagery), action sports such as vintage car racing and air shows, architecture and other unusual subjects such as Imperial Beach’s annual surfing-dog event.
Largely self-taught in photography, Mr. Hill has been a photography teacher for more than six years, mainly with the prestigious Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, where he has taught photographic theory, history and hands-on technique to school children, grades 5 through high school. In the last three years, he has developed and taught a variety of adult digital photography workshops for the Museum, not only for point-and-shooters, but also for those seeking to become more proficient with higher-end digital SLR cameras.
Mr. Hill’s photography has achieved acclaim in a variety of places, from his own publication of the annual Coronado Calendar, to the many images published in national and international periodicals. He has fared well in various photographic competitions, most notably in the 2003 Nature Photography Contest at the Heard Museum (Dallas, TX) where he captured the award for Best Environmental Journalism Image and took first place in the category, Nature Portraits. Currently, 10-15 of his underwater photographs are displayed at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego in its exhibit, The Art of Deception.
